Blinds collect dust and grime over time. If you don't keep up with routine maintenance, you can permanently damage or discolor your blinds. Whether you have wood, fabric or vertical blinds, these basic tips will help keep them clean and make them last longer.
Using the brush attachment, vacuum your blinds often, at least once a week. Be sure to vacuum one at a time, and get the top and bottom or front and back.
Lamb's wool duster
A lamb's-wool duster is soft enough to clean your blinds without damaging them. Don't use plastic dusters as they may scratch or scrape your blinds.
When vacuuming or dusting vertical blinds be sure to use downward motions only. If you go upward you could unhook the slats.
Use a rubber sponge to get residue that won't come off with a duster. A firm, consistent stroke should get most other residue.
If you need to spot clean your blinds, use an all-purpose cleaner. Spray it on a dry cloth and use the cloth to wipe away the spot. Never spray the cleaner directly on the blinds.
Fabric blinds can be taken to a dry cleaner if they get excessively dirty.
Metal and vinyl blinds
For metal and vinyl blinds use a bucket of water with a few drops of dish soap in it. Use a soft sponge to clean and rinse, then be sure to wipe dry.
