Store Your Materials Properly

During a major remodel, you will have so many tasks on your
plate it will seem as if they’ll never be completed. The last thing you want
to handle at the end of a busy day is to clean and organize your materials
for the next day’s work. If you’re going to use them the next day, why
bother? It may seem like an inconvenience, but you should always properly
store your building materials. The only thing more tedious than putting them
away is trying to find the one tool that managed to escape your work area
between one day and the next.

You should expect your
contractors to clean their areas and store all materials at the end of the
day. You don’t want to be responsible for a tool gone missing or the
incompletion of a job because a part was lost. You should also keep track of
every material you purchase, and make sure anything unused is accounted for
at the end of the day. The best way to do this is with a simple
checklist:

  • Are all my building materials
    accounted for?
  • Are all my tools accounted
    for?
  • Are all materials and tools in one area of the work
    space?
  • Are all materials and tools sorted by their
    use?
  • Can I find everything I need for tomorrow’s
    work?
  • Do the construction teams have everything they need
    oor brought onsite?
  • Is everything safe from harm or
    potential damage?

Materials such as glass doors
and tile should be kept in a construction-free zone if not in use. These are
easily breakable, and expensive to replace. If you can, wrap delicate items
in a blanket or keep them in boxes to reduce the risk of damage. Label
delicate items so that people know to pick them up with caution. You will
also want to make sure you purchase extra materials so that if a breakage
occurs, you don’t have to stop construction to purchase a
replacement.

Make sure your tools are stored in a box or in
the work truck. It’s important that you don’t leave power tools or sharp
object lying on the floor. These are a safety hazard, and should be given
proper care. If you don’t have a safe place to store tools, move them out to
your garage or back patio everyday. It may be inconvenient, but it will give
you peace of mind when the next day starts.
