In order to properly cover your windows, you will need accurate measurements before installing new window shutters into your Tampa home. Our guide below will give you the steps needed to record your window measurements for new interior shutters.
Be sure to look out for any obstructions from the windows which may interfere with the shutter operation. These include window cranks, latches, locks or windows that open toward the inside of the room.
The exact measurements you need may vary depending on the type of shutters you have chosen and how you plan to mount the shutters. An inside mount mounts your shutters inside the casings or window jambs which will typically cover only the glass portions of the windows, while an outside mount covers the entire window, including the window trim. A certain amount of depth is required for an inside mount, usually ranging between 1 3/8” and 2 7/8”. The exact depth required depends on your shutter style. If your window is not deep enough, an outside mount will need to be used.
Measuring your window will require 9 measurements of the window—3 horizontally for width and 3 vertically for height. The horizontal measurements will be taken at the edge of the window frame (top and bottom) as well as in the middle of the window. The vertical measurements will be taken at each side (left and right as well as one in the middle. Not every window is uniformly rectangular, so it is common that you will not necessarily get the same number for all 3 measurements.
Write down or sketch out the measurements onto a piece of paper. When getting ready to order, you may not be able to record all nine measurements (which is common if your shutters aren’t custom made). If that is the case, proceed with the following:
- Inside mount: Use the SMALLEST height and width measurement from each of your three respective measurements
- Outside mount: Use the LARGEST height and width measurement from each of your three respective measurements
Any window over 60” tall will require a divider rail in order to support shutters. Measuring for a divider rail varies by which mount you are using:
- Inside mount: Measure in the center of the window from the top window sill (where the top of the shutter frame will be) to the center of where you would like the divider rail to be located.
Outside mount: Measure in the center of the window from the bottom of where the shutter frame will be to the center of where you would like the divider rail to be located
